Enrichment/Substitute Teacher
Applicants can be male or female and do not need to have a formal education in teaching or child development.
Job Description:
As an enrichment/substitute teacher at Secret Forest Playschool you must:
· Be able to ensure the safety and guidance/supervision of a group of 10 preschool (ages 3-5yr old) children on your own as they engage in peer play in a nature setting. You must be able to recognize that each child is unique in their skills, personality and in their needs and be willing to meet them where they are at (on that given day).
· Remember: "At its very best, nature play isn’t scheduled, planned, or led by adults, nor is it confined by grown-ups’ rules. Instead, it’s open-ended, free-time exploration and recreation..." [Green Hearts, 2014]
· Bring your own, unique, teaching interests and experiences into the classroom and inspire others
· Follow all rules of that required of a licensed child care provider in St Louis County
Job roles and responsibilities:
When working with young children you are filling a role that parents are temporarily sharing. So you will be their child's comfort, their example and their guide. So you need to always be at your best! In addition to that you are taking care of other responsibilities as well. This is a demanding job that can be mentally, physically and/or emotionally exhausting at times. Some of the duties include but are not limited to: helping a child that is having a difficult time separating from their family, helping a child with bathroom needs, lifting or carrying a child, serving food (while being aware of diet restrictions/allergies), taking care of health concerns, cleaning the classroom (washing dishes, vacuuming, taking out the trash, etc.), communicating with families, etc. Your job will also be to help preserve childhood so you will need to be able to: use your imagination, get dirty, read/tell stories, explore and PLAY!!
Skills/qualifications:
· Must be patience, calm, loving
· Have knowledge about early childhood development
· Have appropriate expectations for children
· Must be able to anticipate problems before they occur and solve them when they do occur
· Have the ability to multi-task
· Must be dependable and punctual
· Be willing to be creative and spontaneous- make up songs, games or play scenarios, etc
· Share your own skills/talents
· Prepare activities that will engage the children and spark their curiosity
· Must be comfortable in nature/outdoors year round and have the appropriate gear to be out in all elements
· Must be able to work well with others and alone
· Have great communication skills
· Pass a St Louis Country background check (on a yearly basis)
· Take required training: 1st aid and CPR, SUIDS/AHT yearly and additional training as needed and provide documentation to employer
Availability:
· On average you would be scheduled to teach one day a week, 2 full days a month and 1-2 half-days a month (about 25-30 hours a month). This would allow the teacher to schedule time to make appointments, participate in her child's school activities, and for the enrichment teacher to have regular experiences in the classroom so that both he/she and the children feel a connection. *most of these days would be decided in advance with the exception of sick days
· Mondays-Thursdays; half days, 7:15-12:15pm or 12:15-5:15pm or full-days 7:15am-5:15pm.
· Be able to sub 2-3 times a year while the teacher is on vacation. This would likely be 2-4 consecutive days. *all of these days would be decided in advance
Compensation:
Competitive with other teaching/child care positions in our region.
